Position Summary 

The Community Engagement Advocate plays a vital role in finding ways to meaningfully engage Jackson and Josephine County residents in all aspects of SO Health-E work, with particular support to the community on legislative and policy engagement. This position will work directly with people from diverse backgrounds. The ideal candidate will be committed to equity and social justice and be passionate about community-based projects and community leadership development. 

 

This position will identify community members who are potential leaders, and connect them with SO Health-E’s work groups and steering committee to identify their level of involvement. You will spearhead the formation and/or continued support of Community Engagement Work Groups in both Jackson and Josephine Counties, and work with these groups to plan and sponsor community assemblies and trainings that they identify as important in their community.  You will work with the Coalition Staff to develop a community membership recruitment and onboarding process. You will mobilize community members and coalition partners to attend SO Health-E events, assemblies, participate in focus groups, and other forums or trainings. There will be times when meetings take place during the evening, and potentially on some weekends.  

 

This position relies on effective oral and written communication skills, and the ability to create accessibility for people who speak a language other than English and/or people with limited English proficiency, and people who are deaf or hard of hearing. You will have organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, schedule and perform tasks with minimum supervision once onboarding is completed. At times you will be responsible for logistics of meetings and events, including scheduling meetings and rooms, arranging for food, preparing agendas and meeting materials, sending out calendar invites or fliers, taking meeting notes and distributing them. 

 

Due to the in-person engagement that this position requires, we require new hires to be fully vaccinated by start date, and all staff to stay up to date on Covid-19 vaccinations.

                                 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

 

Community Mobilization

  • Develop and implement strategies to communicate and engage effectively with communities traditionally excluded from decision making such as immigrants, low income, persons of color, and people who speak a language other than English and/or people with limited English proficiency, and people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

  • Meet with and engage residents who have lived experience with disparities

  • Mobilize and organize people from diverse backgrounds around equity, legislative and policy issues affecting their communities in partnership with the SO Health-E Policy Committee.

  • Create a bridge between community members and systems to increase community voice in healthcare, education, social services, law enforcement, and government for health equity. 

  • Sharing social media posts of verified information relevant to community

  • Communications via phone, text, email, fliers

  • Create community training and leadership development opportunities to build health equity advocates

 

Form and Support Community Engagement Work Groups

  • Implement SO Health-E community engagement strategy

  • Develop and support equity advocates

 

Organizational Responsibilities 

  • Performance of duties, Coalition representation and professional behavior are in alignment with the organization’s mission, vision, and values

  • Uphold the organization’s commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism by fostering a culture of transparency, cultural awareness, belonging, accountability and respect for all individuals

  • Position goals support the organization’s strategic goals

  • Adhere to fiscal sponsor organization’s and SO Health-E’s policies, procedures, and any other applicable relevant compliance needs

Additional Responsibilities

  • Attend approved meetings relevant to the role

  • Track and report all work and hours weekly

  • Align own work plan priorities with Coalition’s overall work plan and strategic goals

  • Some direct interpretation and/or translation, and/or arranging appropriate interpretation and/or translation services, may be required

  • Additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities)

  • Understanding (formal or lived experience) of health equity, racial justice and the social determinants of health 

  • A passion for social justice and a commitment to ongoing learning

  • Experience working directly with diverse community members, groups and organizations on community issues

  • Demonstrated ability to build trust with communities of color, LGBTQ+ people, low income folks, and people living with a disability

  • Strong interpersonal and group facilitation skills, experience in facilitation a plus

  • Demonstrated ability to stay organized, prioritize workload, and keep good records

  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, business email, Google Calendar, and social media

  • Strong time management skills, have attention to detail, and follow through

  • Commitment to professionalism, direct communication, good listening skills, and problem solving

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proficient in written and spoken English and Spanish preferred. 

 

*Employee must achieve a minimum score of Advanced Low on the OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) test of the ACTFL (American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages), administered by Language Testing International. Sponsor: the Southern Oregon Educational Services District.

Competitive Salary offered, based on qualifications and experience. Benefits include paid vacation time, paid sick time, and a stipend for healthcare.

 

FLSA & Employment Status

Non-Exempt, Three-Quarters Time to Full Time (30 to 40 hours per week.)
